100 Ways to Cope With Stress – Day 36 – Develop your sense of humor

I think one of the reasons I don’t have a lot of stress in my life is due to the fact that I love to laugh and hear and tell jokes (especially puns) and funny stories. I’ve always been like this. I have been blessed with seeing humor in life everywhere I go. It’s common knowledge today and much research has been done regarding the relief of stress through humor. This is nothing new to God! He said in Proverbs 17:22 – A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.

It’s been discovered that the short term benefits of laughing are 1) Stimulation of organs, 2) Activate and relieve your stress response, and 3) Soothe tension. The long term benefits are 1) Improve your immune system, 2) Relieve pain, and 3) Increase personal satisfaction. ( See http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/stress-relief/SR00034 for more on these findings.)

Laughter and humor help us look at life without such a harshness. So, go ahead, feel free to learn a joke and tell it to someone today. See if it doesn’t make you feel less stressed.
